It's great to see more new people getting this. It seems every few days I get another query, most from seeing "Signalling to Mars" on the back of the last SIGNALS [Tars regional newsletter compilation]. Which reminds me... could someone in Britain print this off for Signals and post it to them? It takes so long from here. Spring is here now, and The GA has had a couple of good cruises. Her launching trolley was a great success, until it broke, but I managed to fix it again. Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Excerpts from a "letter to the editor" from New Zealand's Tars branch rep, the appropriately-named Roger Dick [by snail; Roger is unplugged, like Eric Clapton and gets his s2ms in the post]: [snip] "6. July. Correspondent Dave thewlis mentions discussions between his wife and another Tar at the AGM. The Subject: TV Westerns. Tell him to note the book West of Everything by Jane Tompmkins, Dewey No 791.435" [snip] "Sig to Mars 1, (15 April) Doug Faunt asks about books- my copy of Racundra I ordered about 1 1/2 years ago via Univ. Book Shop- a paperback put out by Century Publishing 1984 (in the USA by Hippocrene Books) Foreword by C N Parkinson!! Century also publish books by Masefield, Slocom etc. Rod and Line also about 1 1/2 years ago, a cheapish paperback edition by Oxford U P, 1980." [I think that means Roger bought it 1 1/2 years ago. Roger has no address to reply, but you could reply via s2m ifyou want.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An introduction and a request from Phillip, a new S2M reader: From: PACEY_P@prime1.central-lancashire.ac.uk: May I introduce myself to - and perhaps seek some help from -/ readers of Signalling to Mars?/ I'm a lecturer and librarian (I teach Development Studies) at/ one of Britain's `new' universities at Preston, only an hour's/ journey from the Lake District. Like so many other members of/ TARS, I've loved the Swallows and Amazons books since childhood,/ but although I've been involved with TARS since its launch I have/ not (except as a member of the former literary committee) managed/ to be a very active member, partly due to many other commitments/ and interests, partly due to lack of a car without which many/ TARS events - though relatively near at hand in terms of miles -/ are inaccessible, and perhaps partly due to a slight sense of.../ I don't know what: but as TARS so evidently flourishes, maybe some/ of us feel a wee bit like Dick and Dot at the beginning of Winter/ Holiday - looking in from the outside, wondering if they will be/ accepted in spite of not being sailors (and I can't skate, either)./ So I particularly welcome S2M because for those of us with e-mail/ access, both vast distances and short awkward ones dissolve, and/ at the same time it's as if there is no ice to be broken (in/ the metaphorical, not literal, sense); everybody's involved from/ the moment they log in./ However, I will be making a contribution to next year's literary/ weekend (in October, I think). I'm preparing a paper on an aspect/ of the S&A books which I think is important - it's certainly important/ to me; that is, the significance of camps and cabins (etc) as 'homely'/ resting places and launching pads in the midst of adventure...and of/ the cabins of boats as homely surroundings in which one venture onto/ uncharted waters. I will probably draw parallels with travel writing,/ and with other adventure stories. So here's how you might be able to/ help. Does anyone out there know of any nice examples, in favourite books,/ (but books which I may have missed), of pauses to rest in homely places during/ epic journeys, or of boats, caravans, etc, which function as homely vehicles/ for venturers into strange places? I've got plenty of material, but a few more/ good examples would not come amiss. Thankyou./ Philip Pacey (pacey_p@uk.ac.uclan.p1)/ [I don't think that email address would work, better try the one at the top. And I wonder what all those //// are for?] END OF SIGNALLING TO MARS 6 I hope to put in a couple of newspaper essays soon, if I can scan them with an OCR machine.
