First a note about the GA, one of my favourite S&A "grownups"; and Bills letter about the Eaast Coast books. I'm a bit of an East Coast [that's the Norfolk and Pin Mill books] fan myself, though of course I like all of them ;-) There was a rumour a few months ago that British TV was going to 'do' WDMTGTS and SW: that would be fun, though I always thought SW was one of the "quainter" ones, a bit of cultural cringe there. ***BRIT TARS: Philip or Sam or Hamish or Ray or someone: could you please send this to Rodders Welch at his address in Essex, he might want to put some of it in SIGNALS and I have missed the post. He'd need it by 21. Oct. The address is in Signals and also in Ship's Log. ALSO I'D LOVE SOME WORLDWIDE TARS ADDRESSES eg Tars US, Tars Canada, Tars Australia etc if anyone can help: to put on the Web page. Peter [clerk of signals] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Doug Faunt, faunt@netcom.com (Doug Faunt N6TQS 510-655-8604) has replied to your Clerk of Signals' question [s2m 5] about the GA: "... was she the classic "Ugly Stepmother" of all children's books? She may have justly believed herself to be the kids' grandmother, and therefore to have an interest in their upbringing. Her criticism of Bob Blackett [the Amazons' dead father], even after he is dead, is pretty horrible behaviour though. I wonder why she never approved of him? He must have been the Boy Next Door, as the message on Matterhorn/Kanchenjunga suggests... All sorts of fuel here for exigesis of Ransome's story -- asnd was She there during the first bit of SA? The Amazons were always rushing home in the first few chapters before they joined the island camp." [Doug replies:] Did she actually criticize him? My memory, always subject to error, is of Uncle Jim supporting Mrs. Blackett with the phrase "Bob would have liked them as they are". Also, since apparently the GA did raise the Turner children (I can't locate the quote), she is, in effect, the grandmother of the Amazons. My own grandmother was a lot like her, I think, or maybe it's just our perception of people of that time. 73, and TARS Forever, doug [...wasn't it "... and she brought Father into it. Uncle Jim said 'Bob would have...'" But as I said, I'm a secret GA fan, that's why I so named my boat.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Bill Wright:
