In Canada, where these grandly-titled seabirds are so much more plentiful, they are called "Common Loons", a far less flattering name.

Picture from a Canadian postcard. The birds are also found on the Canadian dollar coin, called a "Loony" after both the bird and an unkind nickname of a Mr Mulrooney, the politician who introduced the coins.
