My new boat [that's what the three million were cheering about] is now named and launched [yesterday!] so this weekend will be a special one! A report on the launching follows. Also a few notes from Deb. That's the lot: S2M is looking a bit thin this issue, so send me something! Your C of S has lost his Nickname File, all the Virtual Tars' addresses are lost. Therefore, some of you are wondering why you have not received this issue ;-) and some of you may be wondering what the heck TARS is and how did you get here --- please don't hesitate to let me know if you don't want this e-newsletter. The report some time ago in the Tars Journal MIXED MOSS, about Ransome and Col Kelsall's cone and sqare signal boards, mentioned that the Colonel kept his copy of the signal code between two padlocked boards, so "the fish had no chance of finding what was in store for them". It's a pity I didn't do the same with my nickname file! [The article was also the source of the term "clerk of signals", being the part played by young Dick Kelsall. I thought this was a good name for my self-assumed role in this newsletter.] Drool, Peter [Dowden] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOME NOTES FROM DEB ABOUT CLASSIC BOAT MAGAZINE Deb, a very new member of TARS NZ, so new in fact that she may not even yet be a member, writes the following: from dshepher@comp.vuw.ac.nz (Deborah Shepherd) [....] As to the real reason for this message, some snippits for "Signalling to Mars"! CLASSIC BOAT magazine, May 1991, has an article entitled "The life of the Nancy Blackett" on page 33. 7 pages of history and photographs. Also in CLASSIC BOAT, February 1991, is an article called "The Classic Broads Cruisers" on page 44. This details the history of the hire fleet motor cruisers ('Margoletta's') on the Broads. CLASSIC BOAT, August 1992, has a report on the 5th International Wooden Boat Show at Greenwich on page 5 - Interesting because the recently restored 'Nancy Blackett', 'Amazon' and 'Swallow' were on show. This issue also has an report on the Shotley Point Regatta - "Traditional craft of all types racing or just on show" (page 70). No Ransome boats, but interesting anyway. CLASSIC BOAT, October 1993, prints a letter in a series debate on "when is a restoration a rebuild and vice versa" in which the writer illustrates his point by quoting from Swallowdale - the piece where Swallow is returned to her crew after repair in chapter 34. If you yourself are interested, send me a postal address and I will send you photocopies. Deb [Deb said that bit about the photocopies to me, but I imagine she'd help anyone else who asks nicely] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAUNCHING OF GREAT AUNT MARIA This first appeared in the rec.boats newsgroup on Internet News, hence the lengthy expanation of things TARry and my netnerdy prose.
